PROBLEM

This project was sponsored by SAS, a software company specializing in advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and data management. Throughout the project, our class received critiques from members of the SAS Product Design team. These designers focus on transforming complex data into interactive, meaningful products that tell compelling stories and connect people with technology.

Small business owners must manage a wide range of responsibilities that directly impact both store operations and their personal well-being. For those in retail, this includes balancing inventory, finances, marketing, and decision-making. Without reliable tools or support systems, managing stock becomes increasingly complex, making it difficult for business owners to make informed decisions.

RESEARCH QUESTION

How might we use APIs to help small business owners manage inventory effectively so they can make confident, more informed decisions?

SCENARIO

Jaz owns two small convenience stores located near each other and is responsible for managing inventory across both locations. As summer approaches, demand for cold snacks begins to rise, and one store starts running low on some popular items. Invi detects the shift in demand and provides recommendations. It suggests restocking popular products while also identifying an opportunity to transfer excess inventory from the second location.

OPPORTUNITIES

Support small retail business owners like Jaz by simplifying how inventory is managed across multiple locations. By leveraging connected systems and predictive insights, this tool can reduce the complexity of tracking stock in order to enable timely, informed decisions. This approach helps alleviate operational burdens, allowing business owners to focus on running their stores rather than constantly monitoring inventory.
